NBA DraftKings & FanDuel DFS Primer: Thursday (1/20)

NBA DraftKings & FanDuel DFS Primer: Thursday (1/20)

How wild was that Wednesday card? It was tough to keep track of 26 teams, but we saw some amazing things. This is my final article of the week, actually, and I’m looking to go out with a bang!

After a massive 13-game card on Wednesday, we have just three games here. That’s a bit aggravating as an NBA fan, but you guys know I love these short slates. It’s always easier to zone in on when there are fewer teams, and I feel like we have a great read on what’s going on here. There’s a lot to discuss, though, so let’s go ahead and get into it!

Injury Report

Core Plays

Stephen Curry (PG – GSW): $10,500 DraftKings, $10,300 FanDuel
Curry is actually in a bit of a slump right now, but he’s impossible to avoid on a three-game slate. We’re still talking about one of the MVP frontrunners, ranked second with 47 DraftKings points per game. He’s also shown us a 70-point upside on numerous occasions this season, and one of those could happen versus a 22nd-ranked Indiana defense.

Devin Booker (SG/SF – PHX): $8,300 DraftKings, $9,000 FanDuel
Booker has been cruising all season, but he’s hungry right now. The baby-faced assassin has scored at least 41 DraftKings points in three straight games, generating a 53-point average in that span. That’s a ridiculous number from a player in this price range, and we know he’s going to be firing up shots at will in a tight Western Conference battle.

Josh Hart (SG/SF – NOP): $6,300 DraftKings, $6,500 FanDuel
It’s hard to understand why Hart remains in this $6K price range. This guy has been playing at a $7,500 level for weeks, scoring at least 24 DK points in 17 straight outings. His stat-stuffing has led to that impressive floor, posting a 36-point average in that span. Good luck finding that from another player in this price range, especially against a 16th-ranked Knicks defense.

Cash Game Considerations

Luka Doncic (PG – DAL): $10,400 DraftKings, $10,900 FanDuel
Doncic is the easy play of the day. This guy is a guaranteed 50 fantasy points, leading all players on this slate with 52.2 DraftKings points per game. He’s been even better recently, scoring at least 67 fantasy points in back-to-back games. That’s the stud we’ve been waiting to see, and a matchup with the Suns should have him as fired up as ever.

Julius Randle (PF/C – NYK): $9,100 DraftKings, $8,700 FanDuel
Randle hasn’t been as good as last year, but this dude has been playing much better recently. In fact, Julius has scored at least 38 fantasy points in seven of his last eight games, dropping a 56-point gem in the most recent outing. The best part of this is the matchup, though, facing a Pelicans team that ranks 23rd in defensive efficiency and 21st in points allowed.

Chris Paul (PG – PHX): $7,500 DraftKings, $7,800 FanDuel
CP3 is quite simply one of the best cash game options on any slate. The Point God is having one of his worst scoring seasons, but his ability to stuff the stat sheet gives him an amazing floor and an incredible average. The 36-year-old has scored at least 27 DK points in all but three games this season en route to a 39-point average. Both of those are really tough to find from any sub-$8K player.

GPP Targets

Kemba Walker (PG – NYK): $6,100 DraftKings, $5,500 FanDuel
Kemba has been in and out of the doghouse all season, but he’s been brilliant as a starter over the last month. If you take out the game where he got injured, Walker is averaging over 41 fantasy points per game across his last six starts. That’s a brilliant number from someone this cheap, and it limits the risk considering New Orleans is the best matchup on this slate.

Chris Duarte (SG/SF – IND): $4,300 DraftKings, $5,100 FanDuel
It seems likely that Indiana will rest some players here in a back-to-back. That’s big news with the Pacers already playing without T.J. McConnell and Myles Turner, allowing Duarte to drop 74 combined DK points across 66 minutes in the last two games. We’re not so sure he’ll reach that 37-point average here, but all you need is 25 from someone this cheap.

Jonathan Kuminga (PF – GSW): $4,300 DraftKings, $5,900 FanDuel
This DraftKings price makes no sense. Kuminga has stepped into a huge role in the absence of Draymond Green, and it looks like he’ll be asked to do even more here with Otto Porter being rested as well. The talented rookie has scored at least 23 DK points in five straight fixtures, providing a 34-point average over his last four outings. We love that with his minutes on the rise, making him one of the best values of the day.

Value Plays

Mitchell Robinson (C – NYK): $5,200 DraftKings, $4,900 FanDuel
Robinson was crippled by foul trouble in the Knicks most recent game, but he was crushing before that. Mitch-Rob had at least 21 DK points in each of his previous five fixtures, providing a 30-point average in that stretch. You can’t ask for any more from a $5K player, especially with the Pelicans owning a 19th OPRK against opposing centers this season.

Mikal Bridges (SG/SF – PHX): $4,800 DraftKings, $4,700 FanDuel
It’s weird to see a sub-$5K player averaging 23.3 DK points per game. In any case, it makes Bridges an excellent value because he should have no problem reaching 5X production. A matchup with Luka is a great way to get him going, too, because that means more minutes and more opportunities on the defensive end. Mikal is averaging over 30 fantasy points per game in his two meetings with the Mavs this season.

Kevon Looney (C – GSW): $4,500 DraftKings, $4,900 FanDuel
Looney has stepped into a huge role without Draymond, and it’s hard to understand why he remains so affordable. The big man has scored at least 16 DK points in 12 straight games, flirting with a 30-point average over his last seven outings. That’s fantastic since Golden State is so shorthanded, and his rebounding should guarantee him a solid game from such a cheap player.
