Jalen Reagor (WR – PHI)
58.6% Rostered (ESPN)
I expect Reagor to lead the Eagles in targets on Sunday. His main competitors are two tight ends and a rookie with injury concerns. Reagor underwhelmed in his rookie season, but he was selected in the first round for a reason: his electric playmaking ability. Unfortunately, Reagon dealt with some of the worst quarterback play in the NFL last year. That said, Carson Wentz is gone, and Jalen Hurts could take his game a step forward in his sophomore season. The Eagles are underdogs and will face a historically soft Atlanta defense. Atlanta’s new regime could put some pressure on Hurts, but I think that helps Reagor’s case. He is a prime candidate to see screens and jet sweeps. Reagor is available in more than 40% of ESPN leagues, but I expect that number to shrink significantly after Week 1 waiver claims process.
DeSean Jackson (WR – LAR)
2.8% Rostered (ESPN)
Death, taxes, and DeSean Jackson catching three passes for 90 yards and a touchdown in Wee k1. Jackson, now 34 years young, is rostered in fewer than three percent of leagues. He has had some health concerns over the past two seasons, but he still never dipped below an average of 47 receiving yards per game. The content practically writes itself… a fully healthy Jackson, with a new gunslinger in Matthew Stafford, could easily produce an attractive Week 1 stat line. Unless I’m in a deep league (14-plus), I’m not touching D-Jax (barring an injury to Robert Woods or Cooper Kupp). He is at least third in the pecking order, fighting for targets with Tyler Higbee, Tutu Atwell, and Van Jefferson. Jackson will probably outperform his ADP, but he is the prime boom-or-bust player, and my hair will go gray before I successfully predict his “boom” weeks.
Tevin Coleman (RB – NYJ)
23.2% Rostered (ESPN)
Very infrequently are starting running backs not selected in fantasy drafts. Tevin Coleman is apparently an exception. The Jets’ RB1 (according to their team depth chart) is unrostered in 80% of leagues. I get it, he has struggled to stay healthy over a full season, and rookie Michael Carter could make a solid case for workhorse duties by the end of the year. However, Carter was a fourth-round pick, and I’ve seen much stiffer competition than Ty Johnson, La’Mical Perine, and Josh Adams in a backfield. Barring injury, Coleman will likely see the most touches of any Jets running back in Week 1. He doesn’t have a high ceiling because the Jets will probably struggle this season, preventing them from running much, but you could do a lot worse than Tevin Coleman if you’re scouring the waiver wire after Week 1.
Tyrell Williams (WR – DET)
36.1% Rostered (ESPN)
The same reason I (and many others) are so high on T.J. Hockenson is the same reason that Williams is on this list: the dearth of proven pass-catchers in Detroit. Not too long ago (okay… five years ago), Williams caught 69 passes for 1,059 yards and seven touchdowns. Maybe that time is gone, but in Williams’ last season (2019), he totaled the second-most yards per game of his career (46.5). Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing in at 205 pounds, Williams is an obvious red-zone threat. Lastly, the Vegas total for the Lions’ wins sits at 4.5 games. If they’re that bad, they’ll be throwing the ball a ton, and Williams stands out as the most capable wide receiver.
Tyrod Taylor (QB – HOU)
3.5% Rostered (ESPN)
Did I say something about bad teams throwing a lot? Checks notes. Oh, yeah! The Houston Texans have the lowest projected win total (4) of any NFL team, per the Vegas odds. Fact: Tyrod Taylor has never thrown more than six interceptions in a season. Another fact: in the three seasons that Taylor started more than three games, he rushed for 14 total touchdowns. Will Tyrod Taylor finish as a top-12 fantasy quarterback? Probably not. Those slots are usually reserved for quarterbacks on high-scoring offenses. However, with his rushing baseline and the Texans likely throwing a ton, Taylor will certainly have top-12 weeks. If you waited until the end of your draft to take a quarterback or are soul-searching on the waiver wire in anticipation of a bye week, you could do much worse than Taylor.
Honorable Mention
Cleveland D/ST
62.1% Rostered (ESPN)
If Cleveland’s D/ST is available in your league, find a reason to pick them up! They play Kansas City in Week 1, so don’t start them now. However, they play the Houston Texans in Week 2! How glorious. Stash them on your bench for a prime Week 2 start.
