Week 2 Value Plays
Quarterback
DraftKings
Justin Fields (CHI) $5,200 @ CLE
I’m writing this on Wednesday and, as of now, it looks like Fields will get his first start this weekend. Through two games, only the Lions are worst in DVOA versus the pass than the Browns. They are also 23rd and 21st in DVOA against a team’s No. 1 and No. 2 wide receiver respectively, and the Bears only really target their top two guys — Allen Robinson and Darnell Mooney. You add all that up with his rushing upside and Fields is a smash play at $5,200.
Honorable mention: Taylor Heinicke (WAS) $5,600 @ BUF
FanDuel
Trevor Lawrence (JAX) $6,600 vs. ARI
Lawrence is more of a volume play this week as the Cardinals are going to score points, forcing Lawrence to throw the ball a ton. The Cardinals’ defense is in the top third of the league in a lot of the advanced metrics, so the matchup doesn’t look great on paper, but junk time points count too and there will be plenty of that to go around. Vegas has the Cardinals minus 7, the second-largest point spread on this slate.
Honorable mention: Justin Fields (CHI) $6,500 @ CLE
Running Back
DraftKings
Cordarrelle Patterson (ATL) $4,600 @ NYG
All offseason, most fantasy analysts weren’t buying Mike Davis as the answer in Atlanta. We expected them to draft a running back, they did not. Then they signed undrafted free agent Javian Hawkins, and we pumped him up as a running back that could take touches away from Davis, and then Hawkins was cut. The Falcons then signed Wayne Gallman, and we got all excited again as he was usable in New York last season, but it was not meant to be as he was cut as well.
Turns out, the guy we should have been talking about has been on the roster the whole time: Hybrid wide receiver turned running back Cordarrelle Patterson. After two weeks he has 21 total touches 136 total yards and one touchdown. This week he gets a Giants team that ranks 27th in DVOA overall, 23rd versus the pass and 30th against the run. At $4,600, yes, please.
Chase Edmonds (ARI) $5,700 @ JAX
Edmonds has been much more efficient with his touches than his backfield mate James Connor through the first two games, and it’s his PPR upside that makes him a better play on DraftKings over Fanduel. He has nine targets over the first two games, and only five running backs have a higher yards per carry than Edmonds (20 carry minimum), and one of those five, Melvin Gordon, had a 70-yard run that skews his average.
Honorable mention: Javonte Williams (DEN) $4,900 vs. NYJ
FanDuel
Saquon Barkley (NYG) $6,000 vs. ATL
I don’t know if Barkley has ever been this cheap on any platform, DraftKings or Fanduel. The Falcons are 27th in rushing DVOA through the first two weeks. Barkley’s workload is still a question mark, but he had an 84-percent snap share last Thursday night. At $6,000, he will be very chalky, but his upside is tremendous.
Sony Michel (LAR) $5,700 vs. TB
This play is only if Darrell Henderson is ruled out, otherwise, I’m fading this entire backfield. However, if Henderson is out, Michel, who split the workload last week, would get the bulk of the carries and likely the goal-to-go situations. The Bucs defense is legit, but Michel could fall into the end zone a few times.
Honorable mention: Javonte Williams (DEN) $5,800 vs. NYJ
Wide Receiver
DraftKings
Marvin Jones Jr. (JAX) $4,900 vs. ARI
Take a look at these two very similar stat lines:
- 19 targets, 11 catches 136 yards and one touchdown
- 20 targets, 11 catches 132 yards and two touchdowns
The bottom receiver is Marvin Jones Jr. who is $4,900 this week. The top receiver is Justin Jefferson who is $7,200 this week. Yes, Jefferson’s upside is likely higher, but the Jaguars could pass the ball 50 times in this game, there is a scenario in which the Vikings only need to throw it 20-25 times, and for $2,300 cheaper, why not Jones?
Hunter Renfrow (LV) $4,000 vs. MIA
Renfrow is a great PPR play on DraftKings at only $4,000. He has 16 targets through two games — the same amount of targets as D.K. Metcalf and more than Allen Robinson, Mike Evans, and Julio Jones. He has limited touchdown upside, so he is much better play on DraftKings than Fanduel, and, at only $4,000, he allows you to pay up elsewhere.
Honorable mention: K.J. Osborn (MIN) $3,500 vs. SEA
FanDuel
Michael Pittman Jr. (IND) $5,600 @ TEN
Pittman’s value took a hit with the announcement that Carson Wentz would miss this game (ankles), but versus this porous Titans’ secondary that ranks 30th in pass DVOA, Pittman should be able to build on his breakout game from last week. He has yet to catch a touchdown this season, but it’s only a matter of time before that happens.
Scotty Miller (TB) $4,800 @ LAR
Antonio Brown was placed on the Covid list, and he will be a long shot to play this weekend, which opens the door for Scotty Miller. Last season, Miller had a few flex-worthy games, in fact, in four of the six games in which he played at least 50 percent of the snaps last season he scored double-digit points.
Honorable mention: Quintez Cephus (DET) $5,300 vs. BAL
Tight End
DraftKings
Gerald Everett (SEA) $3,000 @ MIN
Everett only has four targets on the season, which is far less than I expected him to receive in this offense, but this week he gets a Vikings’ defense that ranks 27th in DVOA versus the tight end position. Cardinals tight end Maxx Williams had a career game against them last week.
Honorable mention: Maxx Williams (ARI) $3,200 @ JAX
FanDuel
Maxx Williams (ARI) $4,700 @ JAX
Speaking of Max Williams, his seven targets last week raised some eyebrows. He is almost halfway to his career-high in targets on the season after just two games. He is very risky, as there is a good chance he gives you a zero, but at $4,700, he can nearly pay off his salary with a single touchdown.
Honorable mention: Harrison Bryant (CLE) $4,900 vs. CHI
