How does Cam Akers’s injury impact the Los Angeles Rams?

The year-ending injury to Cam Akers opens a door of opportunity for Henderson, who, just like Akers, was a second-round pick by this regime. In fact, Henderson was more efficient than Akers in nearly every category last year, though Akers had the momentum at the end of the season. Will the Rams bring in another running back to compete with Henderson for the starting job? It would seem likely, though for now, Henderson is a rock-solid RB2 with top-10 upside.

Akers’ season-ending injury is just a brutal blow for any fantasy manager who had already participated in a draft and selected the second-year back. In terms of the effect on the Rams’ offense, the real impact should be felt only by Darrell Henderson. Henderson did well in a starter’s role early in the season, averaging more than 15 touches and 85 yards per game from Week 2 through 7. With Akers down and Malcolm Brown in Miami, Henderson would likely have a huge role in an excellent offense, with Xavier Jones, Jake Funk, and Raymond Calais the best backups on the roster. The issue, of course, is that the Rams are almost certainly going to sign a veteran running back such as Adrian Peterson, Le’Veon Bell, or Todd Gurley. For now, I’ve moved Henderson to 19th in my 0.5 PPR running back rankings. We’re largely guessing on who the next best back is for Los Angeles, but as of this moment, I’d slightly prefer Jones to Funk (with Calais a distant third), but none crack my top 60 running backs. Again, though, a veteran back is surely on his way.
