Dan Harris’s Updated Fantasy Baseball Third Base Rankings (2020)

Third base isn’t quite the powerhouse fantasy position it once was, but it’s not that far off. Like shortstop, the third base position offers a variety of options.

Five third basemen go off the board before you reach the third round. Reliable veterans such as Kris Bryant, Manny Machado, and Eugenio Suarez await you if you miss. Up and comers like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Yoan Moncada will be there for you after that.

In other words, there are no wrong moves with third base. You are nearly guaranteed to leave your draft with a quality option, regardless of when you decide to dip your toes into the proverbial third base water.

As you’ll see from my rankings below, I’m lower than consensus on Yoan Moncada and Eugenio Suarez. But make little of that. Indeed, the difference between Josh Donaldson, Matt Chapman, Max Muncy, Moncada, and Suarez is a grand total of six spots in my overall rankings. It’s purely personal preference there, so I’m hardly avoiding either player.

As for players that I’m significantly higher on, they’re mostly options to grab in the later rounds. But I’ve explained my feelings on Ryan McMahon before, and they largely have to do with his eligibility at second base. As for Wil Myers and Howie Kendrick, the universal DH all but guarantees them at-bats, which should assure they greatly outperform their current expert consensus ranking.
