For the most part, position scarcity is overrated in fantasy baseball. Of course, a player’s position should factor into your rankings, particularly multi-position eligibility. But many fantasy baseball managers put too much emphasis on trying to fill certain positions by point X or Y in their draft.
With that said, if there was a position to keep a close eye on during your draft, it would be second base. The first second baseman isn’t drafted until the third round, but once you get past the middle rounds, the reliable options are few and far between.
As you’ll see below, options I’m lower on than the expert consensus rankings include Jose Altuve, who checks in as fifth in my second base rankings, and Tommy Edman. For Altuve, much of my ranking has to do with his significant decline in stolen bases over the past two seasons, which I don’t see rebounding at age 30. But there isn’t much of a difference in my ranking of the top-five second basemen anyway, and just five spots separate Keston Hiura from Altuve in my overall rankings.
As for Edman, I’m actually right in line with consensus on the overall rankings, so I’m hardly fading him this season. Indeed, with the addition of the designated hitter, I’m happy to add Edman to any of my teams, so don’t be fooled by the difference in my positional ranking vs. consensus.
As for who has moved up my rankings because of the delay, Garrett Hampson, on whom I was already bullish this season, continues to climb. With the universal DH, and with Ian Desmond opting out, Hampson’s regular playing time is all but assured, and he has the speed to be an absolute difference maker this year.
