Perhaps no other position offers as much flexibility in how fantasy owners approach it as does the outfield. Whether you spend your first four picks on the position or wait until the double-digit rounds to select even your first, you have every opportunity to build a strong base.
This year, more than ever, you’re going to see rankings differ significantly for outfielders. The delayed season and accompanying health concerns have analysts taking into account factors they’ve never had to consider before.
As you’ll see, I am notably — and I mean notably — higher on several players at the position. Some are players who should benefit significantly from the universal DH, including Wil Myers, Sam Hilliard, and Dylan Carlson. Some, such as Garrett Hampson and Cavan Biggio, are the product of having eligibility at second base, the one “thin” position other than catcher.
And some players, well, I just like more than most analysts. Rhys Hoskins (who is outfield eligible on one site) was having an outstanding season until it was derailed by an injury. Nick Castellanos was a beast once he was traded from Detroit and now gets to feast on primarily weak pitching staffs in the AL and NL Central. And Giancarlo Stanton is healthy and can be a league winner.
There are plenty of players on whom I’m lower om than the expert consensus, too, but it’s all just part and parcel of ranking a position where upwards of 80 players may be drafted. Whatever strategy you employ, you’ll have plenty of options.
