Arizona Diamondbacks

MEDIUM — Arizona ticked just above average with stolen base attempts in 2019, and it was the highest in manager Torey Lovullo’s three-year tenure with the team.

__________

Atlanta Braves

HIGH — Manager Brian Snitker ranks above-average in each of the last three seasons for second base stolen base aggressiveness, and his roster has enough speed to warrant this continuing in 2020.

__________

Baltimore Orioles

MEDIUM — The Orioles finished 11th in stolen bases (84) in 114 attempts, but 40 of those steals came from Jonathan Villar. Richie Martin (10) was their only other player with more than five. Manager Brandon Hyde may be willing to let his speedsters run, but he doesn’t have any left in his lineup.

__________

Boston Red Sox

HIGH — If using Ron Roenicke’s managerial tendencies from his time with the Milwaukee Brewers.

__________

Chicago White Sox

MEDIUM — The White Sox ranked 20th in stolen bases (63) last season but seventh in the 2018 campaign under manager Rick Renteria. Anderson, Moncada, and Garcia have received enough of a green light to reach double-digit steals each time. That same courtesy should extend to Robert and Madrigal.

__________

Chicago Cubs

LOW — David Ross is a new manager and we don’t know how he’ll manage the base paths, but the Cubs ranked 29th in stolen bases last year.

__________

Cincinnati Reds

MEDIUM

__________

Cleveland Indians

HIGH

__________

Colorado Rockies

MEDIUM — Manager Bud Black was well above-average in terms of aggressiveness in his previous stint with the San Diego Padres, but he has lessened his need for speed with the Colorado Rockies. His team still runs, but closer to league average now.

__________

Detroit Tigers

LOW — Detroit has ranked 22nd and 24th in stolen base attempts in two seasons under manager Ron Gardenhire. No Tiger has recorded more than 15 steals in a season since 2015. This likely has more to do with their roster than a deep-rooted philosophy. Only Goodrum swiped double-digit bags in 2019, but Maybin could join him depending on the season’s length and amount of starting reps as a leadoff candidate.

__________

Houston Astros

MEDIUM — New manager Dusty Baker has a long history — 22 years — from which we can draw conclusions. Overall, his team’s propensity to run fluctuates from season-to-season, but it hovers around average for his career. Most likely, his aggressiveness is tied to the personnel on his roster.

__________

Kansas City Royals

HIGH

__________

Los Angeles Angels

LOW — Joe. Maddon.

__________

Los Angeles Dodgers

LOW

__________

Miami Marlins

MEDIUM

__________

Milwaukee Brewers

MEDIUM

__________

Minnesota Twins

LOW — Twins were dead last in the league in stolen base attempt rate in 2019 under manager Rocco Baldelli.

__________

New York Yankees

LOW

__________

New York Mets

N/A — Rookie manager Luis Rojas

__________

Oakland Athletics

LOW

__________

Philadelphia Phillies

N/A — New manager Joe Girardi (MEDIUM in New York)

__________

Pittsburgh Pirates

N/A — Rookie manager Derek Shelton

__________

San Diego Padres

N/A — Rookie manager Jayce Tingler

__________

San Francisco Giants

N/A — New manager Gabe Kapler (LOW in Philadelphia)

__________

Seattle Mariners

HIGH

__________

St. Louis Cardinals

HIGH

__________

Tampa Bay Rays

HIGH

__________

Texas Rangers

HIGH

__________

Toronto Blue Jays

LOW

__________

Washington Nationals

HIGH
