Week 1 Waiver Wire Stashes (2019 Fantasy Football)

Week 1 Waiver Wire Stashes (2019 Fantasy Football)

The season has finally arrived with the first kickoff being just days away. While many fantasy owners will be on cruise control heading into Week 1 to see how things shake out, just like the actual NFL, you should be looking to see which players you can claim off waivers that could help your roster in the future. There’s no rule for having to stick with the guys you drafted through the first week and active managers will be the ones who get first dibs on potential steals. Using Yahoo’s ownership percentages, we asked our group of featured experts below to give the lowdown on which players should be stashed away on rosters right now. Check your league’s waiver wire and make these claims.

Q. Name one player with 20% ownership in Yahoo leagues that fantasy owners should stash right now.

Dare Ogunbowale (RB – TB)
“Ogunbowale is owned in 1.5 percent of ESPN leagues and will have a role immediately in the Tampa offense on third downs. Dare could turn out to be the only back worth owning in this offense if he continues to outperform Peyton Barber and Ronald Jones in the regular season. His pass-catching abilities fit really well in Bruce Arian’s offense and he could see a lot of catches as a safety valve if this offensive line continues to struggle. Dare came into camp without being projected to make the roster and ended up forcing Tampa to cut Andre Ellington so there could really be something here.”
– Matthew Bowe (Razzball)

“The stash prior to Week 1 is Tampa Bay’s RB Dare Ogunbowale. The situation with Buccaneers’ rushing attack is a mess. With Peyton Barber and Ronald Jones, Ogunbowale looked like the best RB on the team during the preseason. It’s hard to project that he will be the featured back soon, but he could be the third-down back in an offense that is going to pass a lot. ”
– Mauricio Gutierrez (Estadio Fantasy)

Ty Montgomery (RB – NYJ)
“If you’re looking for a potential PPR flex option, then Ty Montgomery–17% owned in Yahoo leagues–just might fit the bill. While it’s best to take the ‘early season backfield timeshare while Le’Veon Bell shakes off the rust’ coach speak with a huge grain of salt, the Jets could certainly put Montgomery’s versatility and pass-catching to good use all over the field. Favorite of Sam Darnold, TE Chris Herndon’s four-game suspension adds to Montgomery’s early season luster.”
– Allie Fontana (Fighting Chance Fantasy)

“There are reports that Ty Montgomery could have a bigger role in the offense early on as Le’Veon Bell gets back up to speed. Montgomery is a nice handcuff to Bell and will also be used heavily in the passing game making him a great grab and stash option.”
– Walton Spurlin (FantasyPros)

Mike Davis (RB – CHI)
“It’s odd to see someone like Davis on the waiver wire in so many leagues. I’m not saying Davis has starting potential right now, but he’s essentially a two-man handcuff. He’s proven to be a rock-solid pass-catching back who can fill in for Tarik Cohen, while also holding the ability to handle a big workload should David Montgomery miss any time. When stashing players on your bench, you want to have guys who would walk into RB1/2 type roles, and Matt Nagy’s offense allowed Jordan Howard to finish as a top-20 PPR running back last year.”
– Mike Tagliere (FantasyPros)

Adam Humphries (WR – TEN)
“New year, same player being underrated. I was on the Adam Humphries bandwagon last year and he went from fantasy-undrafted to a WR24 finish. Now he is being looked over again, even though there are only 16 receivers that have at least 55 catches and 622 yards each of the last three seasons. The majority of them are going in the first couple of rounds, but Humphries is unowned in most leagues. When you factor in that he was the fourth option in Tampa Bay but is now the second option in a Tennessee offense with a terrible line that will need to throw quick passes, Humphries could be your lottery ticket this season.”
– Michael Tomlin (Fantasy Six Pack)

Deebo Samuel (WR – SF)
“I’ve been drafting Samuel in the back-end of leagues as much as I could. With the release of Jordan Matthews, and injuries to Trent Taylor and fellow rookie Jalen Hurd, the door is open for Samuel to have an impact right from the start. Dante Pettis has been in the coach’s doghouse all summer and Marquise Goodwin has had his share of injuries and inconsistencies. Samuel has the opportunity to take advantage of his situation and possibly never look back. Stash him on your team now, so you won’t have to use a waiver claim or spend FAAB money later.”
– Rich Piazza (Fantasy Shed)

Mecole Hardman (WR – KC)
“I don’t think Mecole Hardman is going to be a surprise on this list, but for me he’s a slam dunk stash. The path to significant playing time for Hardman is fairly clear. Everything seems well on the Tyreek Hill front, but he’s one misstep away from a serious suspension; Sammy Watkins hasn’t been able to stay healthy. The biggest reason he’s a grab and stash straight away for me, though, is that he’s going to have a role on offense right away. He may not play enough to be start-worthy in shallow leagues, but it could be enough to break a long gainer or two and get the attention of waiver wire hounds in your leagues. Add a player who has looked as good as his combine numbers through the Spring now.”
– Jon Collins (Fantasy Sports LR)

Chase Edmonds (RB – ARI)
“Edmonds is a name that has caught my eye since Kliff Kingsbury was hired in Arizona. With them running the air-raid offense, we could be looking at 70-75 offensive snaps per game which is essentially an additional four games worth of snaps over the course of a season when compared to last year. Yes, David Johnson is the clear lead back, but with that many touches to go around, Edmonds may have some stand-alone value. Plus, he has huge upside if anything were to happen to Johnson at some point this season.”
– Bobby Sylvester (FantasyPros)

Albert Wilson (WR – MIA)
“I would make sure you add Albert Wilson if available. The trade of Kenny Stills signals they will use him as the primary downfield playmaker. Ryan Fitzpatrick could have some productive outings working with him in Miami.”
– Scott Engel (RotoBaller)
