Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers: Week 10

Here we go with the 10th week of finding ignored pitchers who turn serviceable for a day. Please take note that rotations are still dicey early in the season, so most of these streaming options are projected starters who aren’t set in stone. That especially holds true for games played later in the week, so be sure to double-check the official announcements as we move closer to each date. Got it? Good!

We are looking for pitchers who are owned in less than 30 percent of Yahoo leagues. Occasionally a recommendation will exceed that threshold if they are in a particularly favorable streaming situation.

Now let’s dive into the good stuff!

Monday, June 3

Corbin Martin (HOU) at Seattle (15%)
Let’s be clear about one thing: Monday is not a good day for streaming pitchers. In fact, it’s not a good day for baseball, as there are only four games on the docket. There’s a good chance you’ll want to wait for better situations, but Martin steps forward as a risk/reward pitcher if you’re willing to roll the dice. The Houston righty was fantastic in his season debut (5.1 IP, 2 ER, 9 K vs. TEX), but he has since allowed seven earned runs with only seven strikeouts through 11 innings over three starts. See what I mean about risk/reward? Martin will have a chance to earn a road victory over Seattle LHP Wade LeBlanc, assuming he can preserve a lead through five innings. I wouldn’t blame you for taking a wait-and-see approach, but Martin is available if needed.

Other Options: None

Tuesday, June 4

Devin Smeltzer (MIN) at Cleveland (2%)
Not only does Smeltzer have an inspiring, cinematic-like story, but he can be of service to your fantasy squad as well. Smeltzer overcame childhood cancer, making his major league debut an emotional one last Tuesday. The rookie pinned down a powerful Milwaukee lineup for six scoreless innings and seven strikeouts. Even though Cleveland is probably much better than its bottom-five offensive ranking suggests, this isn’t necessarily a lineup to fear at this point in time. I feel comfortable taking a chance on the Minnesota newcomer in this divisional clash.

Other Options: Reynaldo Lopez (CWS) at WAS (12%), Jerad Eickhoff (PHI) at SD (25%)

Wednesday, June 5

Chase Anderson (MIL) vs. Miami (16%)
Any time you have a chance to stream against the Marlins, you need to seriously consider taking the opportunity. Miami is the worst hitting team in all of baseball, ranking dead last in wRC+ and most other categories. Anderson is a serviceable pitcher who should check in as a heavy home favorite against Sandy Alcantara. Anderson has the ability to pile up a strikeout per inning, which should lead to a serviceable contribution in all pitching categories on Wednesday.

Other Options: Trent Thornton (TOR) vs. NYY (8%), Anibal Sanchez (WAS) vs. CWS (7%)

Thursday, June 6

Jhoulys Chacin (MIL) vs. Miami (22%)
Chacin hasn’t been good this season, but facing a cringe-worthy Miami offense serves as the perfect bounce-back situation. Everything I said in Anderson’s previous write-up also holds true for Chacin. Going against Marlins’ LHP Caleb Smith gives Chacin lower odds at earning a victory, but he’s still a perfectly good streaming option in an ideal matchup.

Other Options: Tyler Skaggs (LAA) at SEA (36%)

Friday, June 7

Erick Fedde (WAS) at San Diego (10%)
Fedde doesn’t have much upside, but I don’t think he’ll hurt your fantasy squad either. He’s pitching at San Diego, which has MLB’s highest strikeout rate while ranking in the bottom 10 of wRC+. Fedde has allowed one earned run through 10 innings with five strikeouts over two starts this season. He pitches to contact more than we’d like, but a date with the Padres in Petco Park diminishes those concerns.

Other Options: Lance Lynn (TEX) vs. OAK (39%)

Saturday, June 8

Gio Gonzalez (MIL) vs. Pittsburgh (30%)
This week sets up nicely for the Brew Crew pitching staff, as three of them are featured in this article. Gonzalez is another Milwaukee hurler with a good chance at earning a victory. His numbers won’t blow you away, but he’s a solid add to potentially earn a victory on top of a quality start. The Pirates carry a 87 wRC+ at the moment, which currently ranks 23rd.

Other Options: Trevor Richards (MIA) vs. ATL (13%), Corbin Martin (HOU) vs. BAL (15%), Merrill Kelly (ARI) at TOR (6%)

Sunday, June 9

Devin Smeltzer (MIN) at Detroit (2%) / Michael Pineda (MIN) at Detroit (10%)
Pineda will be eligible to come off the injured list, so we’ll need to see if he returns or if Smeltzer gets another shot. Whoever takes the bump for the Twins will enjoy an excellent matchup at Detroit, which ranks 29th in wRC+ with the second-highest strikeout rate. The Marlins and Tigers are the top two offenses to stream against right now, and both of these Minnesota hurlers are capable of posting a quality start.

Other Options: Griffin Canning (LAA) vs. SEA (37%)
