Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: James Paxton, Corey Kluber, Sean Doolittle

The MLB All-Star break is upon us and while many players are celebrating a tremendous first half, there are others that are taking the time off to prepare themselves for the second half. We’ll break down those reports and give you the latest information heading into the games later this week.

James Paxton had to be removed from his start on Thursday with lower back stiffness. He only lasted two-thirds of an inning and gave up three runs before exiting after 17 pitches. The Mariners don’t expect this to be a long-term injury, but he was placed on the 10-day DL on Friday. Look for his situation to be reassessed after the All-Star break.

Corey Kluber is going to miss the All-Star Game after getting an injection in his right knee on July 13. He is currently listed as day-to-day and could return after the break on July 23. Kluber will need about a week to recover and will probably not make a start in this shortened week.

Sean Doolittle was placed on the 10-day DL on July 10 and will also miss the All-Star Game with a pinched nerve in his left foot. He was in a walking boot this week, and he does not currently have a set timetable to return. Kelvin Herrera will take over the closer’s role in the short-term and is worth an add in leagues where all closers are owned.

Here are a few more injuries we are tracking this week.

Logan Morrison (1B – MIN)
Morrison landed on the 10-day disabled list on July 12 with a left hip impingement. He received a cortisone shot on July 12 as well. Morrison expects to return after the minimum 10 days on July 22.

Wilson Ramos (C – TB)
Wilson Ramos had to pull himself out of the All-Star Game after exiting early on July 14 with left hamstring tightness. He’s likely going to be placed on the disabled list, but the stay could be brief.

Rafael Devers (3B – BOS)
Devers was placed on the 10-day DL on July 12 with inflammation in his left shoulder. He said he has been playing with the injury for a month, and it has continued to get worse. He had an MRI that revealed the inflammation. Though this seems like an ongoing issue, the Red Sox are optimistic that he can return on July 21.

Justin Turner (3B – LAD)
Turner is day-to-day with a right adductor strain. He was not in the starting lineup on Friday or Saturday but was available to pinch-hit. Turner should be available to return after the All-Star break.

Felix Hernandez (SP – SEA)
Hernandez was placed on the 10-day DL on July 10 with lower back stiffness. The team is hopeful he’ll be back soon after the break.

Albert Pujols (1B – LAA)
Pujols was placed on the 10-day DL on July 13 with left knee inflammation. He could return to the Angels in late July.

Garrett Richards (SP – LAA)
Richards received some devastating news after being placed on the 10-day DL on July 11. He has UCL damage in his right elbow and is set to undergo Tommy John surgery that will effectively end his 2018 season. Due to the timing of the injury, Richards may not return until 2020.

Marco Estrada (SP – TOR)
Estrada was placed on the 10-day DL on July 13 with a mild left glute strain. He has been throwing side sessions and is expected back after the All-Star break.

Arodys Vizcaino (RP – ATL)
Vizcaino was placed on the 10-day DL on July 14 with inflammation in his right shoulder. This is the second time in the last four weeks that Vizcaino has been on the disabled list with shoulder issues. A.J. Minter could see some save chances in his absence.

Junior Guerra (SP – MIL)
Guerra was placed on the 10-day DL on July 14 after he was hit around in his last start. The injury is currently listed as a right forearm issue, and he does not have a return date set at this point.

Eric Thames (OF – MIL)
Thames is back on the 10-day DL with a right hamstring strain. His return date is not known at this point.

Shelby Miller (SP – ARI)
After coming back from Tommy John surgery, Miller had to be removed from his start last Wednesday with elbow discomfort. He had an MRI on Thursday and the results have not been disclosed. He was placed on the 10-day DL and his return is contingent on the results of the MRI.

Yasiel Puig (OF – LAD)
Puig was placed on the 10-day DL on July 9 with a right oblique strain. He does not have a set return date.

Zach Eflin (SP – PHI)
Eflin is currently out indefinitely after being placed on the 10-day DL with a blister on the middle finger on his right hand.

Francisco Cervelli (C – PIT)
Cervelli was placed on the 7-day DL again after having post-concussive symptoms. The Pirates are concerned about the future of Cervelli as concussion-like symptoms that persist this long are definitely a cause for worry. Fantasy owners may need to look elsewhere in the short-term because of the unsure nature of the situation.

Eduardo Rodriguez (SP – BOS)
Rodriguez came out of his last start after a collision at first base. His initial X-rays were negative on his right ankle. He is currently listed as day-to-day with a sprained ankle.

Scott Schebler (OF – CIN)
X-rays were negative on Schebler’s right shoulder after he exited the game early on Saturday after colliding with the wall. He is listed as day-to-day but did rest on Sunday.
