DraftKings PGA Recommended Plays: RBC Canadian Open

After a tremendous final round at Carnoustie at The Open, the PGA Tour will head back to North America for this week’s RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey. The Canadian Open was once considered one of the premier events on Tour, but since it falls on the week after a major championship on another continent, the number of star players that sign up to play has slowly dwindled over the years.

Recap of last week
It was a relatively average performance last week at The Open. Francesco Molinari made all of the sense in the world but somehow didn’t find a way onto any of my teams. Huge mistake. I would have turned a nice little payday if Jordan Spieth didn’t fall apart in the final round but you cannot win them all. As a life-long golf fan who grew up watching Tiger dominate unlike any other athlete I have ever seen, it was nice to see his name atop the leaderboard on the back nine of a major championship once again. Tommy Fleetwood carried most of my lineups, but ultimately I was let down by Russell Knox and Branden Grace not making the cut.

Storylines heading into this week
There is nothing ground-breaking heading into this week. Most of the discussion heading into the Canadian Open will be focused on what happened on Carnoustie rather than what is going to happen this week at Glen Abbey. But there is a relatively decent amount of star talent at this week’s tournament compared to previous years. Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Tommy Fleetwood, Sergio Garcia and Bubba Watson are some of the most recognizable names on Tour and they are teeing it up this week. Tony Finau, Matt Kuchar, and Kevin Kisner will also be in attendance.

The Course
This par-72 layout plays right around 7,250 yards. Three of the par 5s come on the back-nine so there is plenty of excitement at the end of every round. All four of the par 5s play at less than 560 yards which leads to birdies and eagles galore. There is nothing all that challenging about this course besides the firmness of the greens. Landing greens-in-regulation will go a long way in terms of one’s ability to compete here. Water comes into play on a few holes but shouldn’t be overly daunting to any of the top players in the field. The greens are bentgrass but are relatively flat so putting should not be a major challenge for most players this week. 40 players in 2017 scored -10 or below, which says a lot about the difficulty of this track.

Previous winners

  • 2017: Jhonattan Vegas
  • 2016: Jhonattan Vegas
  • 2015: Jason Day
  • 2014: Tim Clark (who?)
  • 2013: Brandt Snedeker

Golfers to Target

Tony Finau $9,800
You will notice a trend this week. Target the big-bombers. They will have such an advantage on the rest of the field when it comes to sticking GIR. Finau hits it farther than anyone and has flashed strong play in recent weeks.

Kevin Kisner $9,000
I value recent performance more than most so it should come as no surprise that I love Kisner’s price tag here. I am not sure how lower-ranked players are priced higher than him on DraftKings this week. His tee-to-green game should suit him well here.

Harold Varner $7,100
Varner is priced cheaper than what he was in his previous two tournaments, where he carded two top-six finishes. He has been excellent in the past month and is simply too hard to ignore given his recent form.

Jamie Lovemark $7,800
A bomber in his own right, Lovemark is one of the more talented players on Tour without a signature victory to his name. Lovemark has not missed a cut since early May and this course really plays to his strengths. I would not be surprised to see him in contention once the weekend rolls around.
