FanDuel NBA Value Plays: Monday (12/18)

Welcome to another edition of Monday value plays! We are now seven days from Christmas, meaning it’s probably time to start shopping for those in your life. Since shopping is on your to-do list you may not have a whole lot of time to spend constructing your FanDuel lineup. No worries, I’ll outline a number of value plays in this article as a guide for you to be able to get a couple stars in your lineup and balance it with some value.

We have a large 10 game slate tonight so there’s plenty of opportunity to find some gems at the $5,500 or below price tag. This will allow you to spend up on the likes of Ben Simmons, James Harden, Russ Westbrook. There are a number of injuries in the Power Forward position tonight so there is definitely value to be had there specifically. Use the below as a guide to fill in your lineup so you can get your core players slotted in as well. As always, good luck!

Point Guard

Ricky Rubio (UTH): $4,900 at HOU

Ricky Rubio has a juicy matchup tonight with a run and gun Rockets who rank 24th in defense against point guards. He can be a sneaky good rebounder, but most of his fantasy points come from scoring and assists. He’s finished in double-digit scoring in four of the past five games, logging at least four assists in all four games. Rubio is a bit of a risky play tonight, he’ll need 24 FD points to hit 5x value and he’s only done that in four of the past 13 games, but he is averaging 25.8 FD points per game this season as a whole. He is purely a matchup play tonight since the Jazz will see more possessions than usual due to the Rockets playing at the eighth-fastest pace in the league. He also sees the bulk of minutes at the point guard position averaging 28 minutes per game this season so his opportunity will definitely be there.

Milos Teodosic (LAC): $4,900 at SAS

Milos Teodosic will need 24 FD points to hit the desired 5x value, which he’s done in two of the three games he’s played in since his return from a foot injury. While his matchup isn’t ideal going against the Spurs who rank 12th in defense against point guards, Teodosic just put up 13 points, six rebounds and five assists against the Miami Heat who rank fourth against point guards resulting in 26.7 FD points. His price is low right now because he’s working back from injury so this is a good opportunity to get a high-floor player at a value price. He’s finished in double-figure scoring in two of his three games and has grabbed six rebounds in two consecutive games while playing at least 25 minutes in the past two games. He provides a good mix of opportunity and volume for a player at this price.

Shooting Guard

Wesley Matthews (DAL): $4,800 vs. PHO

Wesley Matthews draws a plus matchup against a Phoenix Suns team that ranks 27th in defense against shooting guards. He gets plenty of opportunity averaging 33 minutes per game over the past 10 games. A player that draws these kinds of minutes against a bad defense who plays at a fast pace is sure to produce. Matthews hasn’t been shooting very well, but has been getting volume putting up 14 shots per game over the past five games. In those games, he’s averaging 14 points, three rebounds and three assists and has finished with at least 14 points in three of the past five. Matthews will need 24 FD points to hit 5x value, which he’s done in three of the past five as well.

Justin Holiday (CHI): $4,800 vs. PHI

This Bulls vs. 76ers game should produce plenty of points with neither team sporting a good defense and playing at a fast pace. Justin Holiday should certainly benefit as a player who averages putting up 12 shots per game in 33 minutes per game this season. Holiday will need 24 FD points to hit value and he’s done that in three of the past five games. He’s exceeded 30 FD points five times in 27 games so he has a really nice ceiling mixed with a high floor as the starting guard in a game with an over/under set at 209 per Westgate sports book. Even with Holiday struggling with his shot in the past five games he’s averaging 10 points, two assists and six rebounds so he is not solely dependent on scoring which makes him a solid floor play at this price.

Small Forward

David Nwaba (CHI): $4,900 vs. PHI

Going back to the well in this Bulls vs. 76ers matchup with David Nwaba, who is a player’s coach Fred Hoiberg likes a lot. This is evidenced by Nwaba averaging 26 minutes per game since returning from injury. At the $4,900 price tag, he’ll need to produce at least 24 FD points to validate his selection, he’s achieved that feat in four of the past five games. Nwaba plays with a lot of energy and provides solid rebounding numbers to supplement his scoring production. He’s grabbed at least five rebounds in five straight games, including back-to-back games with eight rebounds. He’s also finished in double-figure scoring in five of the past six. Nwaba is averaging 26.9 FD points in his last five outings exceeding the 30 point threshold three times during that stretch. He’s a hot hand right now and could prove to be a steal tonight.

Evan Turner (POR): $3,800 at MIN

While I typically don’t trust Evan Turner in any kind of fantasy format, he has been seeing much more time recently logging at least 25 minutes in four of the past five games. There’s no denying his talent, he’s an active rebounder and has the ability to create his own shot, he just seems disinterested sometimes. However, at the $3,800 price tag he’s hard to ignore even going against a Timberwolves team that ranks seventh against the small forward position. Maurice Harkless continues to be in and out of the lineup since being injured so it’s safer now to trust Turner as he has been given an uptick in usage as a result. Turner would need just 19 FD points to hit value, which he’s done in two of the past four games. He offers a pretty limited ceiling, but has been providing a fairly stable floor of 16-20 FD points. If you are in dire need of a very low-cost player to support an expensive core Turner may be your best bet.

Power Forward

Jordan Bell (GSW): $4,700 at LAL

With Zaza Pachulia and Draymond Green both out for tonight’s game against the Lakers, Jordan Bell stands to get a healthy workload. Bell has started the past two games for the Warriors recording 31.2 and 25.2 FD points respectively. He’d only need to get at least 23 FD points to hit value so you can see the potential here. He’s in line for big minutes tonight in a matchup with a Lakers team that struggles mightily against front-court opponents ranking dead last against power forwards and 29th against centers. This is a prime position for Bell who is a very active rebounder and can finish around the rim. He couldn’t ask for a better matchup going against a bad defense in a game that sports the highest over/under on the slate according to the Westgate sports book. He looks to be a lock tonight and at $4,700 could be the best value of the night.

Trey Lyles (DEN): $4,900 at OKC

Trey Lyles has been on some kind of hot streak over the past few games. He’s showing his scoring prowess from all over the floor and has averaged 18 points over the past four games while logging an average of 28 minutes per game. This is definitely a case where you’d be riding a hot hand, in a matchup against an Oklahoma City Thunder team that ranks 13th against power forwards. Lyles would need at least 24 FD points to hit value which he’s done in two of the past four games, exceeding the 30 point threshold in both of those games. It’s a nice matchup for Lyles too, a game that sports the third-highest over/under at 211.5 according to Westgate against a team that likes to get up and down the floor.  It’s a matchup that definitely fits what Lyles likes to do and he’ll be given plenty of opportunity tonight to continue his hot streak. He’s exceeded at least 20 FD points in eight of the last nine games so he does provide a fairly stable floor as well.

Center

Robin Lopez (CHI): $5,500 vs. PHI

I wouldn’t blame you for thinking this article is just a Bulls article for as many Bulls players I have listed in here, but the truth is I just really like this matchup. Robin Lopez gets a matchup with a team that is already soft defensively against centers ranking dead last in the league, but on top of that, the 76ers are missing starting center Joel Embiid. This opens up Lopez for an increase in rebounding and scoring as he won’t have to contend with the young, athletic star center. He’s already finished with double-figure scoring in 11 of the past 12 games, and that trend looks to continue tonight. Lopez is a model of consistency and provides a very stable floor, with 30+ FD point upside. Coming in right at the value limit of $5,500 it may be hard to ignore this bargain as Lopez offers double-double potential each night. He will certainly have plenty of opportunity to make good on his value this evening.
