Fantasy Basketball Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 19

We’re a week past the trade deadline and as the rosters settle from buyouts and injuries, this week’s Waiver Wire Pickups looks at four wings and one big man who can help alter your league’s playoff picture.

Gary Harris (SG – DEN) 49%
While the emergence of Nikola Jokic (C – DEN) has perhaps garnered more press, Harris’ development has proven just as important for the Denver Nuggets this season. The third-year shooting guard is becoming a scorer to be recognized, averaging close to 17 points per game in February while shooting 46 percent from three-point territory. While his accuracy from downtown may not be sustainable for the rest of the season, there’s good reason to believe this is a permanent step forward for Harris as opposed to a blip on the radar. He’s a career 34.5 percent three-point shooter, but that’s weighed down heavily by his struggles as a 19-year old rookie. Harris improved to 35.4 percent shooting his sophomore season and 42 percent this year. If Harris is available in year league – and there’s still a decent chance he is – pick him up immediately.

T.J. Warren (SF – PHO) 41%W
Warren is crafty and a bit of a throwback player. Despite playing the three, he rarely shoots it, and he works the midrange game as well as anyone east of Toronto. His shot selection means Warren might not be the best player on a team who needs three point shooting but can be the perfect addition to one looking for efficient scoring (he’s scoring 13.2 points per game on 49 percent shooting for the season). The Phoenix Suns are both way out of the playoff picture and view Warren as a piece of the future – which means he might continue to improve on his career-high 29.6 minutes per game. More playing time leads to more scoring. If you need a wing, Warren’s a smart pick up for the rest of the season.

Kyle Korver (SG – CLE) 34%
One of the greatest three-point shooters in NBA history (fifth all-time in three-pointers made and seventh overall in three-point shooting percentage), Korver has been on fire since being traded to the Cavaliers in early January. The 35-year-old is shooting over 50 percent from downtown since moving to Cleveland and scored 15.5 points per game in February. With Kevin Love (PF – CLE) likely out until the playoffs, the Cavaliers will need Korver’s outside shooting to create space in the lane for LeBron James (SF, PF – CLE) and Kyrie Irving (PG – CLE). While Korver is known for his good team defense, that typically doesn’t translate into steals or blocks. If you need a more well-rounded player, it’s okay to take a pass, but if you’re looking for shooting, Korver’s your man.

Andre Iguodala (SF – GS) 24%
Kevin Durant’s (SF, PF – GS) injury creates an opportunity for veteran Andre Iguodala to display his all-around game. Iguodala is well past his number one scoring option days in Philadelphia and hasn’t ended a season with double-digit scoring averages since his sole season in Denver. But he’s a decent shooter (35 percent from three this season and 49 percent overall) who can be the Warriors primary or secondary ball handler, depending on their lineup. Head coach Steve Kerr is currently starting rookie Patrick McCaw (SG, SF – GS) in Durant’s place, and the Warriors recently signed veteran Matt Barnes (SF – GS), but Iguodala should be the primary recipient of Durant’s minutes. If you need an all-around player who can fill up a box score, Iguodala is a solid pickup.

Richaun Holmes (PF/C – PHI) 10%
The only big man on this week’s list, Richaun Holmes is an efficient post player who is seeing an increase in minutes with Joel Embiid (C – PHI) out for the year. The former second round pick is shooting 54.4 percent from the floor this season. His per-36-minutes numbers (from Basketball-Reference.com) have him putting up 15.6 points and grabbing 9.4 rebounds. Holmes is carving out a nice role as the 76ers’ first big man off the bench and has scored double digits in three of his part four games. If head coach Brett Brown tires of Jahlil Okafor’s (C – PHI) passive defense, Holmes could find himself getting more run through the end of the season. The potential for even more playing time makes him a smart pickup, especially for those looking for depth at forward or center.
