NFL Stacking Options for Week 5

The stacks crystallize a little quicker than previous weeks for a couple of reasons. There are some games which project to be plodding affairs that we want to avoid. There are also a few elite defenses taking the field which we’ll also steer clear of. That leaves a few top end options for stacking.

Let the boys at DFSR look at some stacks you can take advantage of this weekend.

Stack #1 – New York Giants vs. Green Bay Packers

QB – Eli Manning
Elite Options – Odell Beckham
Value Options – Victor Cruz, Sterling Shepard

I have a very strong feeling this week that the combination of Manning and Beckham Jr. will win a ton of tournaments. The Packers are the big home favorites (-7.5) after a bye week and should be chasing for the majority of the game. The Giants don’t have much of a run game even with the possibility if Rashad Jennings returning.

Add to it that the Packers rank second in Defense vs. Rush on the Player Lab tool which explains the high 40+ pass attempt projection. Manning has thrown 35+ passes in three straight weeks adding 350+ yards in two of those despite only throwing one touchdown. He will most likely be low owned due to that and also comes with an affordable price on both sites.

Beckham Jr. proved he can be shut down last week vs. the Vikings where Xavier Rhodes limited him to just 23 yards. I see a huge bounce back this week vs. the Packers where he will match up against Sam Shields or Damarious Randall who have ranked out very poorly this season. Manning continues to target OBJ at a high rate as he ranks 10th (39 targets) among wide receivers through four weeks. With the high projection on Manning’s attempts this week it will also be viable to consider Cruz on the outside or Shepard in the slot.

Stack #2 – Green Bay Packers vs. New York Giants

QB – Aaron Rodgers
Elite Options – Jordy Nelson, Eddie Lacy
Value Options –  Randall Cobb

I am expecting this game to easily reach the Over (48) this week as the Packers are coming off a bye week after finally looking impressive in a win vs. the Lions two weeks ago. Why do I have Rodgers/Nelson sitting behind Manning and OBJ? It is solely based on game flow as I expect the Packers to roll over the Giants who are coming off a brutal MNF loss to the Vikings.

The Packers are one team I consider stacking a QB/WR/RB due to the fact Rodgers is targeting Nelson at very high rate (27 targets) compared to the other starting wide receivers on the roster (Cobb-18, Adams-16). The Packers proved against the Lions they can feed the ball to their top WR and then rely on the run game to pound the defense into submission. Rodgers threw for four touchdowns while Lacy ran for 100+ yards on the day.

Even with the tough matchup (NYG rank sixth in Def vs. Rush), I see Lacy easily getting 15+ carries this week. If you want a very low owned punt option, consider Cobb who has been less than impressive this season with just 12 receptions for 132 yards. With Nelson stretching the field, it should open up room over the middle for Cobb. He is best used on DraftKings where you get a full point for a reception.

Stack #3 – Oakland Raiders vs. San Diego Chargers

QB – Derek Carr
Elite Options – Michael Crabtree
Value Options – Amari Cooper, DeAndre Washington

This game currently holds the highest projected Over/Under (50) with the Raiders coming in as 3.5 point home favorites and projected for the fourth highest points (26.5) of any team this weekend. Through four weeks the Chargers have been pretty good through the air ranking 18th in Defense vs. the Pass on the Player Lab tool but could take a hit moving forward. It was announced yesterday that star corner Jason Verrett has a partially torn ACL and will be done for the season.

While the Chargers do have other quality corners (Brandon Flowers, Casey Hayward) I see them struggling in their first week without Verrett as they sort out the defense. Carr has been excellent so far in 2016 completing 104 of 153 pass attempts (68%) for 1,066 yards while throwing nine touchdowns and just one interception.

Crabtree (37) and Cooper (35) have nearly split targets this season, but it has been Crabtree putting up the most fantasy points with four touchdowns to Cooper’s zero. Crabtree is the elite option right now and cheaper on both sites. Cooper should be the lower owned of the two making for a better large field tournament option.

Stack #4 – New England Patriots vs. Cleveland Browns

QB – Tom Brady
Elite Options – Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski
Value Option – Danny Amendola

You didn’t think I was going to go through an entire stacks article and not mention the return of the great Tom Brady. Well, here it is. He is back and gets a tremendous matchup vs. one of the worst team in the NFL. Looking at the Player Lab tool the Browns rank as the 26th best team in Defense vs. the Pass this season while Brady is projected for just over 42 pass attempts.

With Brady coming back from a four-game suspension I expect him to come out firing to make a statement to both his team and the NFL. His top target this weekend should be Edelman who should easily see 10+ targets this week. I am not all worried about the health of Gronkowski who was once again limited in practice Wednesday (hamstring). His snaps increased last week in his second week back and should be a full-go with Brady returning.

Am I suggesting he was taking it easy while Brady was out? Absolutely! The Patriots are not a team to let up with a big lead, and I fully expect a blowout this week.
