It’s a mixed blessing to be an NBA free agent this summer. With the NBA salary cap expected to go up by as much as 30 percent in 2016, many players want to sign shorter deals this summer to maximize their future payouts. On the flip side, many teams are planning on giving role players larger, sometimes even maximum salary contracts this summer since players will command more next season. All of it makes for a very intriguing NBA offseason.
Teams and players are poised to begin negotiating contracts on July 1, so there is no better time than now to take a look at the top 50 NBA free agents who will make waves this offseason.

1. LeBron James – SF, CLE – There is zero chance James is leaving Cleveland, but since he opted out of his deal, the “greatest player in the world” has to top this list. Expect him to re-sign with Cleveland for another one or two year deal and to continue his quest to bring a title to the Cavs.
- 2015 stats – 25.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 7.4 assists, 1.6 steals per game
2. LaMarcus Aldridge – PF, POR – Aldridge, a four-time NBA All-Star, has all but said he will leave Portland this summer. As one of the best offensive low-post players in the league, the 29-year-old Texas native will have plenty of suitors vying for his services. The Spurs and Lakers are the early front-runners while Dallas and Houston are not far behind.
- 2015 stats – 23.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.0 blocks per game
3. Kevin Love – PF, CLE – Love’s first season in Cleveland did not go as well as he had hoped, culminating in a season-ending shoulder injury suffered in the first round of the playoffs. Even with Cleveland able to offer Love the most money and the best chance of winning, the 26-year-old may leave for a more prominent role elsewhere.
- 2015 stats – 16.4 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.9 three-pointers per game
4. Marc Gasol – C, MEM – Gasol had a breakout season last year, earning a starting nod on the NBA All-Star team. One of the most adept passing big men in the league, his services will be highly sought after. Unfortunately for the rest of the NBA, Gasol is likely to remain in his adoptive hometown of Memphis for the long haul.
- 2015 stats – 17.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.6 blocks per game
5. Kawhi Leonard – SF, SAS – With Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili nearing retirement and Leonard being a restricted free agent, the Spurs have all the power to give Leonard a max deal. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Leonard, is the bridge to the future for San Antonio, and they will not let him leave.
- 2015 stats – 16.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.3 steals per game
6. Jimmy Butler – SG, CHI – As an All-Star and the Most Improved Player in the NBA, Butler has won the gamble he took last offseason when he turned down a lucrative extension from Chicago. As a restricted free-agent, Chicago is poised to match any offer Butler receives from another team. Meaning Butler will be back in Chicago for at least one more season, if not the next five years.
- 2015 stats – 20.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.8 steals per game
7. DeAndre Jordan – C, LAC – The defensive-minded Jordan seems ready to walk from the Clippers due to an apparent difference in opinion on his role in the offense. Dallas has been upfront about making Jordan their top priority this summer. Now only time will tell if they can convince him to leave more money on the table in Los Angeles.
- 2015 stats – 11.5 points, 15.0 rebounds, 1.0 steals, 2.2 blocks per game
8. Paul Millsap – PF, ATL – Millsap dropped 17.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game the last two seasons with the Hawks. He has proven to be one of the best big men in the league and deserving of a raise. Now it is a question of how much more is Millsap worth than the $9.5M a year he made last season.
- 2015 stats – 16.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.8 blocks per game
9. Goran Dragic – PG, MIA – After coming over from Phoenix mid-season, Dragic became the primary ball-handler for the Heat like he always wanted to be. With the market light on point guards this offseason, will Miami make Dragic an offer sizeable enough to keep him on South Beach or will another team lure him away?
- 2015 stats – 16.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.0 steals per game
10. Draymond Green – PF, GSW – Coming off a career-year and as one of the leaders on the World Champion Warriors, Green is likely to be offered a max contract to stay in Oakland. As a restricted free-agent, Golden State could let Green test the market and decide to match any offers received by the third-year pro. Either way, a return to the Warriors seems to be in the cards.
- 2015 stats – 11.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.6 steals per game
11. Dwyane Wade – SG, MIA – Wade is entering the stretch run of his career, and this summer represents one of the last chances he has to grab a big contract. While he is likely to remain in Miami, the possibility remains that Wade may finally leave the only team he has ever played for and join the Lakers, Knicks or Cavaliers.
- 2015 stats – 21.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 1.2 steals per game
12. Greg Monroe – PF, DET – A reliable low-post scoring option, Monroe is not a fit in Stan Van Gundy’s system in Detroit. As an unrestricted free agent, there will be plenty of teams making pitches to the 25-year-old forward. Ready to move on from Motown, Monroe appears to be on his way to New York.
- 2015 stats – 15.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.1 steals per game
13. Brook Lopez – C, BKN – An offensively talented big man, Lopez has struggled with injuries the past few seasons. Looking fully healthy entering his eighth NBA season, the seven-footer could command big dollars on the open market. Despite opting out of his contract, all signs point to a return to Brooklyn for the 27-year-old center.
- 2015 stats – 17.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 1.8 blocks per game
14. Brandon Knight – PG, PHX – Playing at an All-Star level in Milwaukee, Knight limped down the stretch after being dealt to Phoenix. With all the assets the Suns spent to acquire Knight, there is no chance they will let him walk this summer. Since Knight is a restricted free-agent, the 23-year-old point guard is a lock to be in Arizona for the next few years.
- 2015 stats – 17.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 2.0 three-pointers per game
15. Tobias Harris – SF, ORL – A versatile scorer, Harris has ramped up his game since coming to Orlando. Only 22 years old, he also shows enough promise to be an offensive force on the wing. Despite his potential, the Magic appear willing to let Harris walk this summer. Expect Boston and Detroit to be big players for the former Tennessee Volunteer.
- 2015 stats – 17.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.3 three-pointers per game
16. Danny Green – SG, SAS – One of the league’s best three-point shooters, Green appears on his way out as San Antonio tries to load up for another title run. If he switches teams, Green will get the chance to average over 30 minutes per game for the first time in his career.
- 2015 stats – 11.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.4 three-pointers per game
17. Monta Ellis – SG, DAL – After a contentious couple of seasons in Dallas, Ellis made life easier on the Mavericks by opting out and becoming a free agent. A talented offensive weapon, the soon to be 30-year-old can thrive if given enough shots on offense. Indiana and Miami, if Wade leaves, have been mentioned as possible destinations.
- 2015 stats – 18.9 points, 2.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.9 steals per game
18. Khris Middleton – SG, MIL – As a tenacious defender and good shooter from distance, the 23-year-old will be an attractive free agent this summer. He’s a restricted free agent and Milwaukee appears ready to match any offers the young shooting guard will get.
- 2015 stats – 13.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 1.4 three-pointers per game
19. Tristan Thompson – PF, CLE – In the playoffs, Thompson got the chance to showcase his exceptional rebounding ability. His talent on the offensive glass has multiple teams looking for meetings. As a dependable big off the bench, Cleveland will do whatever it takes to bring back the 24-year-old power forward.
- 2015 stats – 8.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 0.4 steals, 0.7 blocks per game
20. DeMarre Carroll – SF, ATL – The do-everything small forward for the Hawks last season, Carroll may be on his way out of Atlanta. His tenacity and grit on both sides of the court will have some teams willing to offer big money to the small forward, putting him out of the Hawks price range. Detroit, Boston and Houston have all expressed interest in Carroll.
